Milford Haven

Two oil refineries dominate the skyline, but don't let that put you off - this working harbour town has proper character once you get past the industrial bits. The deep natural harbour that made Milford Haven one of Britain's most important ports still draws the eye, especially from the revamped Milford Waterfront where smart restaurants now occupy old quayside buildings.

Walking the Marina reveals the town's split personality perfectly. Modern pontoons bob with pleasure craft while tankers lumber past in the main channel. It's oddly compelling, this mix of leisure and industry. The Milford Haven Museum tells the story better than most, tucked away but worth seeking out for its tales of whaling fleets and naval connections.

Milford Haven Beach offers surprisingly decent sand, though the views across to the refineries won't win any beauty contests. Far better to explore Hubberston Pill or take a wander through Goosepill Woods where the industrial noise fades. The Waterfront Gallery and Pure Art provide cultural respites when the weather turns.

Trains run direct from Swansea and Cardiff, making this surprisingly accessible for a place that feels properly remote. The surrounding Pembrokeshire countryside unfolds in all directions - you're twenty minutes from Pembroke Castle, half an hour from Tenby's beaches, and perfectly positioned for exploring the Preseli Hills.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes complete sense. You get the best of both worlds - easy access to the working waterfront and museums, but with countryside or coastal accommodation that lets you escape the industrial backdrop when you fancy some peace.
