Foxbury Shaw

A proper woodland walk near Leatherhead, Foxbury Shaw offers the kind of quiet forest you don't have to trek miles for. It's dense enough to feel like you've actually left the Surrey commuter belt behind - tall trees, dappled light, and enough space to breathe without tripping over other visitors.

The woodland itself is straightforward: footpaths wind through mixed deciduous forest with the occasional clearing. You're looking at a decent walk if you want it, maybe forty minutes to an hour depending on how lost you're willing to get. It's the sort of place where teenagers stop complaining about their phones and younger kids can actually run about without breaking their necks on roots.

Historically it's woodland that's been here for ages - the kind of place with proper character rather than a manicured nature reserve. In autumn the floor's carpeted with leaves. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right. Winter it's muddy and atmospheric in equal measure.

If you're based at Henfold Lakes - a proper campsite about five and a half miles away - or anywhere around Leatherhead, this is a no-brainer for a morning out. Free access, no visitor centre nonsense, just trees and peace. Don't expect facilities or parking information online - you'll need to work that out on arrival. Best visited midweek if you want the woodland mostly to yourself.
