Foxdown Children's Farm

A working farm just outside Bridport where children can actually do things rather than just gawp at animals through fences. Foxdown lets kids get hands-on - feeding, petting, sometimes helping with basic tasks depending on the day and season. The setup is pretty informal; you're on an actual farm, not a sanitised theme park version, which means muddy boots and real farm smells are part of the deal.

It works best for under-tens who still find farm animals genuinely exciting. Older kids might lose interest within an hour unless they're the type who enjoy helping out. The farm animals - goats, chickens, sheep, that sort of thing - are used to being around visitors, so it's fairly relaxed and safe for toddlers who won't spook them.

You'll want to ring ahead to check opening times and admission fees before you go, as these farms often keep irregular hours depending on school holidays and the farming calendar. Allow a couple of hours max, especially if the weather's decent and you're planning to let them loose in any outdoor spaces. Wellies are a proper good idea.

It's genuinely useful for families staying at The Dorset Hideaway just up the road - close enough for a morning visit without needing to pile everyone into the car for hours. Slightly further out, Coppet Hill and Newlands Holiday Park are both within easy reach if you're after a half-day activity to break up a quieter holiday.
