Freshwater East

The sand at Freshwater East stretches properly golden when the sun hits it right, backed by cliffs that rise up like something out of a postcard you'd actually want to send. This is one of Pembrokeshire's more generous beaches - broad, well-maintained, and the kind of place where you can actually find a quiet spot even in summer without having to arrive at dawn.

It's family-friendly territory. Lifeguards are usually on duty during peak season, there's a decent cafe up top, and the beach shelves gradually so small kids won't feel out of their depth. The rock pools at low tide keep older children entertained for hours, and the backdrop of those red sandstone cliffs makes for genuine drama without the overcrowded circus you get at some Welsh beaches.

Walkers tend to get just as much from Freshwater East as sunbathers. The coastal path sweeps along the cliffside both directions, offering proper views across Carmarthen Bay. An hour's walk either way won't knacker you, but the exercise feels worthwhile.

From Pembroke, it's a straightforward drive - nothing complicated - making it easy to slot into a week based at one of the local parks like Haven Kiln Park or Florence Springs. Worth allowing a full afternoon rather than popping in for an hour. The car park does fill up in August, so aim for mid-week or shoulder season if you can. Free to access, no faffing about with parking charges or entry fees.
