Friezland Wood

Friezland Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Tunbridge Wells, the sort of place you can slip into for an hour and feel like you've stepped away from everything. It's beech and oak mostly, with a decent network of paths that wind through in no particular hurry. The ground stays reasonably dry underfoot even after rain, which counts for something in Sussex.

You won't find signboards or a visitor centre here - it's just woodland as it should be. Bring the kids if you want, though they'll need to be the type who can amuse themselves spotting birds and turning over logs rather than demanding a play area. Families staying at Hopgarden Glamping and Camping, six miles away, could easily make this part of a half-day excursion. Dog walkers absolutely love it.

Allow a couple of hours if you're going to do it properly and take a few wrong turns - part of the charm, really. Autumn is when it genuinely sings, all the colours dropping and the light coming through differently. Spring's decent too if you're after bluebells, though you'll want to go mid-April for peak bloom.

It's free, as far as I can tell, and there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, which means no car park fee either. Parking is roadside near the wood itself. Not everyone's cup of tea - it lacks the manicured appeal of proper country estates - but if you want to actually walk through a wood rather than tick off a destination, this does the job.
