The walk up Fuches, a modest peak near Llanidloes, rewards you with proper views across the Powys moorland - the kind of landscape that gets under your skin rather than shouting about itself. It's not a dramatic summit; the hill sits at a reasonable height and takes about an hour to climb from the nearest approach, making it doable for families with decent stamina and anyone who fancies a proper leg-stretch without needing mountaineering experience.

You get moorland underfoot, patches of scrub, and on a clear day the surrounding ridges open up nicely. The approach is free and unregulated - just park sensibly and head out. The terrain can be boggy after rain, so waterproof boots aren't a luxury. Walkers with OS maps will get the most from it; there's something satisfying about ticking off a minor peak that doesn't appear on every Instagram account.

The real draw is fitting Fuches into a proper walking week. Llanidloes sits nearby with its market-town amenities, and the surrounding area is carpeted with decent camps. Glangwy Farm Camping is closest at under three miles, while Red Kite and Clywedog Riverside both offer riverside access if you want to break up hill days with easier exploration. Ty Llewelyn and Dol-Llys Farm are further afield but still within comfortable reach.

Allow two to three hours return if you're wandering rather than racing. The moorland walk itself is the experience here - if you're after café stops or visitor facilities, you'll find those down in Llanidloes.
