Fulking Isolation Hosptial (Fulking Grange) Ruins

The crumbling remains of Fulking Isolation Hospital sit tucked into the Sussex landscape just outside Henfield, a ghostly reminder of early 20th-century medicine. What you'll find are weathered brick walls and overgrown foundations - this was purpose-built to keep infectious disease patients away from the main population, back when tuberculosis and scarlet fever meant isolation meant real isolation.

It's not a manicured heritage site with interpretive panels and a gift shop. The ruins feel properly abandoned, which is either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you want from a morning out. History enthusiasts will appreciate the raw documentation of how we handled epidemics a century ago. Walkers exploring the downland near Henfield might stumble across it as a curiosity rather than a destination in itself.

Allow 20 minutes if you find it, longer if you're photographing or sketching. The site sits on open access land, so technically you can visit anytime without paying, though facilities are non-existent. Spring and early summer work best - you'll have better visibility through the undergrowth and the local flora's actually quite nice.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Foot of the Downs is barely a mile away - it makes a decent addition to a walking route rather than a standalone trip. Pair it with a ramble up onto the Downs themselves. The hospital alone won't occupy much of your afternoon, but it's the sort of place that sticks with you.
