Furze Copse

A proper woodland walk without the crowds you'd get at the better-known New Forest spots. Furze Copse sits just outside Salisbury and offers exactly what it says on the tin - dense forest, quiet paths, and the kind of peace you're after when you've had enough of the market town bustle.

The woodland itself is straightforward. You're walking through beech and oak mostly, with patches of darker conifers breaking up the canopy. In spring, the floor comes alive with bluebells - genuinely lovely if you time it right. Summer's thick and cool, which means you can walk without melting even on warm days. The paths are well-trodden but not manicured, so there's a proper forest feel rather than theme-park woodland.

It's ideal for walkers who want a genuine hour or two among trees without needing a navigation app. Kids will manage fine - there's nothing dangerous, though it's not dramatic enough to hold younger children's attention for more than an hour. History enthusiasts won't find much to sink teeth into, but if you're based at Salisbury Hillside Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and the weather's decent, it's a solid morning out.

Access appears to be free and open, though you'll want to check locally before heading out. Go early if you can - the car park fills up on weekends, which tells you something. Close enough to Salisbury for a half-day trip, far enough away to feel like actual countryside.
