Furze Hill

The forest sprawls across West Berkshire with the kind of dense woodland that makes you forget Thatcham is only minutes away. Furze Hill is proper woodland - the sort of place where you can actually lose the sound of traffic, which in the south east is saying something.

What you get here is straightforward: tree-lined paths that wind through mixed woodland, open enough to walk comfortably but thick enough to feel genuinely away from it all. The undergrowth changes with the seasons - bluebells in spring, then dense green canopy cover through summer. It's the sort of forest that rewards a slow wander rather than a destination-based visit.

Families with younger kids might spend an hour or two exploring the paths and spotting wildlife. Walkers will appreciate it as a proper leg-stretcher without the drama of hills or technical terrain. If you're after dramatic views or a tea shop at the end, look elsewhere - this is woodland for its own sake.

Timing-wise, early morning or late afternoon are best if you want any sense of solitude, though even then it's rarely rammed. The ground can get boggy in winter, so decent boots matter.
