Fyvie Castle, Garden & Estate (National Trust for Scotland)

The drive through Aberdeenshire to Fyvie Castle takes you past rolling farmland that feels properly remote until suddenly you're at the gates of one of Scotland's finest castles. The place is vast - five storeys of grey stone that's been added to by nearly every generation since the 13th century, which means you get a architectural muddle that somehow works brilliantly.

Inside, it's the kind of castle where you genuinely lose track of time. There's a library with thousands of books, tapestries that stop you mid-corridor, and enough period rooms to keep history buffs occupied for hours. The dungeon's worth a look if you're into that sort of thing, though it's more atmospheric than grim. Families with younger kids might find the sheer scale a bit overwhelming - there's not a huge amount of interactive stuff - but older children and teenagers who actually engage with history will eat it up.

The grounds are the real draw though. The estate gardens are extensive without feeling manicured to death, and there's proper woodland walks if you've got the energy. Spring's lovely here, but honestly any time outside the worst winter weather works fine.

Nearby, Glamping Bothie offers a proper base camp if you want to make a long weekend of it - Turriff's only a few miles away for supplies and a decent pub. Allow a full day minimum if you're doing castle and gardens properly. Entry's reasonably priced for what you get, and the National Trust for Scotland runs it with genuine care rather than theme-park efficiency.
