Galley Hill

Galley Hill rises just outside Carnforth as a proper fell walk rather than a strenuous mountain bash. The summit gives you views across Morecambe Bay and back towards the Lake District fells - on a clear day it's genuinely worth the climb. Allow a couple of hours up and down depending on your pace; it's steep in sections but nothing you can't manage in decent boots.

This is the kind of walk that suits families with older kids and regular walkers looking for something achievable without a full day's commitment. The paths are generally well-marked, though they can get boggy after rain so waterproofs aren't optional. You get real views without the Alpine fairy tale nonsense - just solid Lancashire moorland and the kind of light that changes every ten minutes.

The walk works brilliantly if you're basing yourself at one of the glamping spots nearby. Hidden Hills is closest at under four miles, while Once Upon a Fell at six miles gives you another option if you want something different. Pair it with a morning walk and an afternoon exploring Carnforth itself - the town has proper character and the Steamtown Railway Museum is genuinely absorbing if you're into that sort of thing.

Go midweek if you can. Weekends bring out the Instagram crowd, and Galley Hill doesn't deserve that kind of pressure. The real magic is in having the summit mostly to yourself with a flask of tea and nothing but moorland silence.
