Hornby Castle

The ruins of Hornby Castle rise unexpectedly from the Lancashire landscape just outside Carnforth, a proper medieval stronghold that's been crumbling away since the English Civil War. What you're actually looking at is a 13th-century fortress that's lost its roof and most of its interior walls, but the outer shell remains imposing enough - particularly the round corner towers that give it real character.

You can walk right up to it and explore the grounds freely, which is the main appeal. The castle sits in open parkland with decent views across to the Lune Valley, and there's something quite satisfying about clambering over the rubble and imagining what life was like inside these walls five hundred years ago. History buffs will want to spend a good hour here picking over the architectural details; families with younger children might find it less gripping after twenty minutes unless they're keen on climbing stones.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so plan accordingly. The site is unstaffed and free to visit, which keeps it feeling authentic rather than over-managed. It works well as a half-day addition to a week based at one of the nearby parks - Hidden Hills or Crook O'Lune are both close enough for a morning visit before heading elsewhere.
