Gannet Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Gannet Wood sits just outside Lockerbie and delivers the kind of peaceful forest experience that makes you forget you're in the Scottish Lowlands at all. The trees are dense enough to muffle road noise, and there's a decent network of paths threading through - nothing too technical, but enough variety that you won't feel like you're walking the same route twice.

It's ideal for families who want their kids to burn off energy without needing a two-hour hike, and equally good for anyone wanting a break from caravan life at Queensberry Bay or West Moss-Side without driving far. The woodland canopy changes character with the seasons - spring bluebells are worth timing for, autumn colours do the job nicely too.

Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how many side paths you explore. Bring decent boots if there's been rain. The real value here is proximity to Lockerbie itself, which means you can combine this with a town wander or a visit to somewhere more obviously touristy without losing half a day to driving.

Free to access, as far as anyone knows. Car park situation varies by the time of day, but it rarely gets rammed. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the school run crowd. It's not spectacular enough to warrant a special trip on its own, but it's exactly the sort of local wood that makes a park holiday feel genuinely restful rather than just "somewhere to park the caravan."
