Garreg Lwyd

The walk up Garreg Lwyd from Rhayader is proper steep, and honestly, that's half the appeal. You're looking at a decent grunt through moorland and bracken to reach this bare, rocky peak in the Powys hills. The summit itself isn't a tidy viewpoint with benches and interpretive boards - it's just stone and wind and views that stretch across Mid Wales when the weather behaves.

It's the kind of place that rewards walkers rather than casual strollers. Bring a map, decent boots, and realistic expectations about the climb. You'll likely have the place to yourself, which matters if you're the type who hikes to escape crowds rather than tick off Instagram spots. The views back towards Rhayader and across the surrounding farmland are worth the effort, particularly in late afternoon light when the shadows deepen across the valleys.

Not one for young kids or anyone after an easy afternoon outing. This is a proper hill walk that'll take a solid couple of hours there and back depending on fitness and route choice. The nearest camping options are clustered within five miles - Wyeside Caravan & Camping Park and Elan Oaks both put you within striking distance if you're basing yourself in the area.

Go for the solitude and the honest climb. Skip it if you want manicured paths and visitor facilities. The Powys peaks don't apologise for being remote, and Garreg Lwyd doesn't bother either.
