Rhayader

Red kites wheel overhead as the River Wye carves through this small Welsh market town, creating one of Mid Wales's most atmospheric spots. Rhayader sits at the gateway to the Elan Valley, surrounded by wild moorland that stretches for miles in every direction.

The town itself is proper Welsh - stone buildings, narrow streets, and a pace that slows you right down. Most visitors use it as their launching pad for the spectacular Elan Valley Visitors Centre, where Victorian engineering meets raw Welsh wilderness. Those famous reservoirs aren't just pretty - they're genuinely dramatic, carved into valleys that feel utterly remote.

Hiking here is extraordinary. Peaks like Cerrig Cochion and Y Gamrhiw offer views that go on forever, while Cnwch Wood provides gentler walking through ancient woodland. The landscape shifts constantly - one minute you're on bare moorland, the next scrambling up rocky outcrops like Craig Ddu or Garreg Lwyd.

Getting here means winding roads through spectacular countryside. Llandrindod Wells is your nearest proper town, about 12 miles southeast. But honestly, the isolation is half the appeal.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Elan Oaks or Wyeside makes perfect sense. You wake up to those soaring red kites and can be on the hills within minutes. The glamping options at places like Welsh Glamping let you experience this wild country without roughing it completely. Mid Wales doesn't get much more atmospheric than this.
