Gate Wood End

A proper woodland walk sits just outside Doncaster, where Gate Wood End offers a straightforward escape from the town rather than any dramatic scenery. It's the kind of place you'd stumble upon if you were staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Mooreacres is only a couple of miles away - and fancied stretching your legs without driving anywhere.

The woodland itself is unremarkable in the best sense. Mature trees, decent paths, nothing that'll stop you in your tracks but plenty enough to clear your head on a decent day. It's more about the walking than the arrival. If you've got young children who tire easily, they might lose interest after 45 minutes or so. Walkers heading south from Doncaster proper will find it a useful waypoint rather than a destination unto itself.

Worth the detour? Only if you're camping at Mooreacres or Bawtry caravan park and need a break from site facilities. Otherwise, you're probably better spending petrol money getting to somewhere with a bit more character. The woodland does its job - it's green, it's quiet, and it gets you moving - but there's nothing here that screams 'plan your day around this'. Go if you're in the area. Don't go out of your way.
