Gavin Maxwell Museum

Ring of Bright Water - the book that made Gavin Maxwell famous - was written about his life here on the Scottish west coast, and the museum at Sandaig gives you the actual place where it all happened. You're standing where the otter man himself lived, in a converted boathouse that's equal parts museum and pilgrimage site for anyone who's ever read about Maxwell's obsessive love affair with otters.

The place feels intimate rather than grand. You get his journals, photographs, and personal bits that piece together who he really was - romantic idealist, difficult character, utterly committed to his animals. The otters themselves are long gone, but walking the shoreline afterwards makes sense of why he chose this spot. It's genuinely remote, which is precisely the point.

Historians and nature writers will get the most from this. If your kids are under twelve and expecting interactive exhibits, they'll find it a bit thin. Book an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're a Maxwell devotee. Kyle of Lochalsh is the nearest proper town, about twenty minutes' drive away, so don't expect to drop in casually.

If you're based at Reraig Caravan & Camping on Skye - which is brilliant for a Highland fortnight - the museum makes a proper excursion across the water. Pair it with a walk along the coast afterwards. It's not flashy, but it's real.
