Gernos Mountain

Two hours of steady climbing through bracken and heather brings you to one of Ceredigion's less trumpeted summits, where the views stretch clear across to Cardigan Bay on a decent day. Gernos Mountain won't trouble any peak-baggers' bucket lists, but it delivers proper Welsh hillwalking without the crowds you'll find on Snowdonia's better-known tops.

The ascent from the Llandysul side follows old drovers' paths through sheep pasture before hitting the open moorland. Walking boots essential - the ground stays boggy even in summer, and those tussocky grass clumps will have you over if you're not paying attention. Allow three hours for the round trip if you're reasonably fit.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of effort will find it manageable, though the youngest hikers might struggle with the final push to the summit cairn. The descent can be tough on the knees, particularly if it's been wet.

From holiday parks like Thistledown Glamping or Wild Wellingtons Glamping, it's a short drive to the trailhead - though you'll want to check locally about parking arrangements. The mountain works well as a morning adventure before exploring the Teifi Valley's gentler attractions in the afternoon. Just don't expect mountain rescue facilities if things go wrong - this is proper back-country territory where self-reliance matters.
