Giggle Alley

The name alone makes you smile before you've even arrived. Giggle Alley is a small nature reserve tucked away near Holmrook in Cumbria, and it's exactly the sort of place that rewards curiosity over grand expectations.

It's essentially a wooded walk through a gill - one of those steep-sided valleys that cut through the Lake District's landscape. Nothing too strenuous, but you'll need to watch your footing on the uneven ground. The reserve follows a beck, and depending on the season, you might catch kingfishers or spot mosses and ferns that thrive in the damp shade. It's the sort of place where a short walk feels properly rewarding.

Walkers will get more from this than most. If you've got young kids expecting obvious attractions, they might tire quickly - it's not a playground, just a walk. But children who enjoy splashing in streams and turning over logs will have a brilliant time. The whole thing takes maybe an hour at a leisurely pace.

Being so close to Fisherground Campsite - less than a mile away - makes it a natural add-on for a Cumbrian holiday. It's free to access and open year-round, so there's no excuse to give it a miss if you're camping nearby. Worth fitting in before heading to the bigger Lake District attractions further south. Not dramatic or famous, but honest woodland that actually delivers on what it promises.
