It's proper fell country - the sort of place where sheep outnumber tourists by a considerable margin.

Seat How and The Hows loom overhead, offering crackling summit views for those willing to put the work in. The walking here is magnificent but unforgiving. Great How and Goat Crag provide more technical scrambles, while the cluster of tarns - Low Tarn, Greendale Tarn, and the aptly named Stony Tarn - make for lovely wild swimming spots on the rare hot day.

Eskdale's narrow-gauge railway chugs through twice daily, connecting this quiet corner to the broader Lake District network. Most visitors rush through en route to Scafell Pike, missing the point entirely. The real joy lies in the emptiness - miles of moorland where you'll hear nothing but wind and the occasional bleat.

Reaching Holmrook requires commitment. The nearest proper town is Whitehaven, about twenty minutes by car along winding roads. Public transport is limited to the seasonal Ravenglass connection, making a park base essential for exploring properly.

Basing yourself at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense for serious walkers. You're ideally positioned for dawn starts on the fells, with Blea Tarn and Eel Tarn providing quieter alternatives when the main peaks are busy. The landscape here doesn't pamper you - it challenges. That's rather the point.
