The Hows

The Hows is a modest fell that rises above Holmrook with straightforward views across the Lake District valleys. It's the sort of peak you climb in an afternoon rather than make a day of, but it's entirely honest about what it is - a good vantage point without pretension.

The walk itself is manageable. You're looking at roughly two hours from start to finish, depending on your pace and whether you linger at the top. The path is clear enough, though it gets steep near the summit, which catches a few people off guard. The reward is a proper panoramic view across the fells and down towards the coast - on a clear day, you can see proper distance.

This is walkers' territory, not a destination for anyone wanting a gentle stroll or a sit-down with cake. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of uphill graft will get something from it. If you're staying at Fisherground Campsite just down the road, it's ideal for a morning sortie. Great Langdale Campsite and BaysBrown Farm are close enough too if you're basing yourselves in the area and want to tick off local peaks without committing to a full-day expedition.

The real appeal is the approach itself - you're away from the tourist crush of the major fells, walking through proper working landscape. It's the sort of fell that reminds you why people come to Cumbria in the first place. No visitor centre, no car park charges, no crowds. Just a path and a view.
