Gilpin Harbour

The beach at Gilpin Harbour isn't what you'd call famous. It's a modest stretch of sand and shingle near Downpatrick, the kind of place locals know about but tourists often miss. That's rather its charm.

You get a proper working harbour here - fishing boats, nets, the real deal - which gives the whole spot character that polished resort beaches lack. The beach itself is functional rather than spectacular: fine for paddling, collecting shells, or just sitting with a thermos while you watch the activity on the water. Kids will find it entertaining enough for a couple of hours, particularly if they're into boats and the sort of low-key exploration that doesn't require theme parks.

It's free to visit, naturally, and there's no particular time pressure. Summer weekends will be busier, but this isn't the sort of place that gets rammed. The sand can be a bit mixed with shingle depending on the tide, so proper beach shoes are wise rather than optional.

For a caravan holiday based at Coneyisland or Castle Ward - both excellent parks within a few miles - Gilpin Harbour works as a morning outing or a wind-down walk rather than an all-day destination. It pairs well with Downpatrick town itself, which has genuine medieval history if you want to combine beach time with something more substantial. Walkers will find the harbour area pleasant enough, though there's nothing dramatically scenic about it. It's useful, unpretentious, and honest. Worth fitting in, not worth planning your entire trip around.
