Glack's Hill

The walk up Glack's Hill from Banchory is straightforward enough - nothing too technical, but it'll take the best part of an afternoon if you want to do it properly. The peak itself sits in that rolling Aberdeenshire landscape where the Highlands start to show their teeth, offering decent views across the Dee valley on a clear day. You're looking at maybe two hours up and back, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath.

This is solid walking country rather than dramatic scenery. If you're based at one of the caravan parks round here - Feughside is closest at just over a mile away - it's a proper way to work off breakfast without driving miles. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the trudge tedious without something to aim for. History types won't find much to chew on, but walkers who like their hills modest and accessible will appreciate the straightforward route and the chance to get properly outside.

The real draw is that it fits neatly into a Deeside holiday. Banchory itself is worth a wander for its shops and pubs, and you're well-placed for tackling bigger peaks if the mood takes you. No faffing about with permits or paying fees - just turn up and walk. Timing-wise, spring and early autumn are best; midges can be vicious in July and August. Go early in the day if possible, and check the weather forecast beforehand. It's the sort of hill that rewards a bit of planning but punishes rushing.
