Glasdrum Wood National Nature Reserve

You'll find yourself walking through proper temperate rainforest - yes, Scotland's got them - when you venture into Glasdrum Wood near Appin. It's not tropical, obviously, but the moss-covered oaks and constant drip of moisture make it feel genuinely otherworldly. The reserve sprawls across ancient woodland where sunlight barely breaks through, and the smell is unmistakably alive - damp earth and decomposing leaves rather than petrol station coffee.

Walkers absolutely get the most from this place. There's a decent trail system that doesn't require rock climbing or specialist kit, just proper waterproofs and patience. Allow two to three hours if you're taking it slowly and actually looking at the lichen-covered rocks and ferns. You'll spot plenty of evidence of wild boar if you know what to look for - churned-up earth, bark stripping - which adds a frisson of mild excitement to the amble.

Families with older kids will cope fine. Younger ones might get restless once the initial novelty of "forest" wears off around the twenty-minute mark. It's genuinely free - no gate, no ticket booth, just turn up and walk.
