Glastonbury Tor

The climb up Glastonbury Tor takes about twenty minutes if you're reasonably fit, though the final stretch gets properly steep. What you're rewarded with is a 360-degree view across the Somerset Levels that genuinely justifies the leg work - on a clear day you can see for miles, right across to the Mendips. The ruined tower at the summit is what remains of St Michael's Church, and it's the kind of spot where you understand why people have been drawn here for centuries.

Walkers will love this. The path is well-trodden and clearly marked, though it can get muddy after rain. Families with younger kids should be prepared for complaints about the final push upwards - it's not technical, but it's relentless. History enthusiasts will find the tower itself modest but atmospheric; the views are really the main draw rather than any grand structures.

It's free to visit and open year-round. Allow an hour return trip if you're taking it steady, less if you're powering up. Early morning visits beat the afternoon crowds, and spring or autumn give you the clearest skies. Winter is quieter but can be properly windy at the top.

Glastonbury town itself is minutes away, making this a natural addition to a wider visit. If you're based at Old Oaks Touring or Bobsfield Campsite, both within two miles, you could easily knock this off before breakfast. It works well paired with a wander round the town's charity shops and cafes afterwards, though the Tor alone can feel slightly anticlimactic if the weather's poor.
