Owl Enlightment CIC

You won't find the typical zoo experience at Owl Enlightenment, just outside Glastonbury. This is a specialist facility dedicated to owls - and that's it. No lions, no meerkats, no crowds fighting for space by the enclosures. The focus is entirely on these nocturnal birds, which means you're getting something genuinely different from the standard family day out.

The centre operates as a community interest company, so there's a genuine conservation angle running through what they do. You'll see owls at various stages - some in recovery, others on permanent display - and the staff actually know their stuff. Whether it's barn owls, tawny owls, or something more exotic, there's real expertise on hand. Most visitors spend a couple of hours here, which is about right unless you're an owl fanatic.

For families, it works best with older kids who can appreciate the detail. Very young children might find the pace a bit slow, especially if the owls aren't being particularly active. Birdwatchers and wildlife photographers will get proper value here. School groups often visit, which tells you something about the educational side.

The location is genuinely handy for a touring holiday. It pairs well with a Glastonbury trip - the town itself is only minutes away - so you could easily combine this with exploring the town centre and checking out nearby Chalice Well Gardens or hitting some of the surrounding walking routes. Worth a morning or early afternoon during a week-long stay in the area.
