Glen Plantation

The trees here are genuinely impressive - tall Scots pines and spruces that create proper forest atmosphere within spitting distance of Dumfries. Glen Plantation is essentially a working woodland that's open to the public, with a handful of walking trails winding through it. Nothing fancy, no visitor centre or craft shop, just good straightforward woodland walking.

You get decent views across the Dumfries and Galloway landscape if you pick the right path, and it's the sort of place where you'll actually see wildlife - roe deer are common, and on a quiet morning you might spot buzzards overhead. The walks range from short strolls to longer tramps depending on your mood, so it suits both families after an hour's outing and serious walkers needing proper exercise.

There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, though facilities are minimal - you'll want to arrive with what you need rather than expecting a cafe or facilities block. Go in autumn when the light filters through the conifers beautifully, or winter when it's properly atmospheric. Summer can feel a bit gloomy under all that canopy.

If you're based at Brandedleys or Landal Barnsoul - both within a couple of miles - this works perfectly as a morning walk before heading elsewhere in the region. It's not a destination in itself, but it's exactly the kind of place that justifies a caravan holiday in this part of Scotland. Local knowledge stuff, where the real character of the area reveals itself.
