Gorse Plantation

The moment you step into Gorse Plantation, the noise of Beverley fades away. This modest woodland sits just outside the town and feels genuinely removed from everything - a proper escape on foot. The trees are dense enough that you lose sight of the surrounding landscape almost immediately, which is the whole appeal really.

It's essentially a straightforward walk through mixed woodland with gorse bushes (hence the name) breaking up the treeline. Nothing dramatic, nothing that'll take your breath away, but it's honest and uncomplicated. The paths wind through without too much elevation change, making it accessible for families with younger children or anyone not after a serious hike. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on how aimless you want to be.

Walkers will appreciate this more than sightseers looking for vistas. There's no iconic view waiting at the end, no Instagram moment - it's about the rhythm of walking through trees and clearing your head. That said, if you're staying at Butt Farm Caravan, Campsite & Glamping just down the road, it's a five-minute drive and worth tacking on to your itinerary. Cherry Burton Leisure Park is slightly further out, but still close enough for a morning woodland wander before heading elsewhere.

Best visited outside the wettest months - the paths can get boggy. Spring when the gorse flowers are out would be ideal. It won't blow your mind, but it does exactly what it promises.
