Gorse Wood

Gorse Wood sits just outside Hereford and is exactly the sort of place you'd wander into by accident and end up spending longer than planned. It's a proper woodland walk - nothing fancy, just good tree cover, paths that fork off in different directions, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget the town's just down the road.

The wood itself isn't vast, which works in its favour. You're not going to get lost or spend three hours trudging through mud. Most people will get the measure of it in 45 minutes to an hour, though if you're the sort who likes to sit on a log with a flask and watch for birds, you could stretch it. The gorse scrub gives it character - yellow flowers in spring if you time it right - and there's proper woodland feel without being pretentious about it.

Walkers will appreciate it as a straightforward leg-stretcher, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Kingfisher Meadow or Brook House Woods. Families with younger kids won't find anything thrilling here - no adventure playgrounds or woodland centres - but it's decent for working off energy on a quiet afternoon. The paths are manageable underfoot most of the time, though after heavy rain expect some boggy patches.

It's free access, which is always welcome. If you're basing yourself around Hereford and fancying a woodland potter without driving miles, Gorse Wood does the job. Nothing earth-shattering, but solid.
