Gowbarrow Fell (Wainwright)

Sharp ridges and sweeping views over Ullswater make this one of the more rewarding low-level fells in the Eastern Lakes. At just 481 metres, Gowbarrow won't test hardened walkers, but the panoramic vistas from the top punch well above their weight - you'll get cracking shots of the lake snaking between the surrounding peaks.

The ascent from Aira Force car park takes about an hour and a half, following a fairly obvious path that winds through mixed woodland before emerging onto open fellside. Kids who can manage a proper walk will love the scramble over the rocky outcrop at the summit, though the route's not suitable for pushchairs.

What sets this fell apart is its position - perched right above Ullswater's northern shore near Pooley Bridge. The views take in the full length of the lake, with Helvellyn's bulk dominating the southern horizon. On a clear day, you can pick out the Pennines rolling away to the east.

It's free to walk, naturally, and the path stays reasonable even after rain. Best tackled in the morning when the light catches the water properly. If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Pooley Bridge - Ullswater Holiday Park or Park Foot are both within easy driving distance - this makes a lovely half-day expedition that'll leave energy for an afternoon by the lake.
