Little Meldrum

The walk up Little Meldrum is a proper Lake District classic, and at 962 metres it punches well above its weight. From Penrith you're looking at a straightforward approach, and the fell itself rewards you with views across to Helvellyn and down toward Ullswater that'll make the effort feel worthwhile.

It's not a technical climb by any stretch. The route is clear enough, especially in decent weather, and most walkers will manage it in under three hours return. The summit's a proper rounded top rather than a dramatic peak, so don't expect jagged edges or exposure - this is Lake District fell walking made accessible. On a clear day the panorama justifies the slog; on a grey one you might find yourself wondering whether you should've gone for coffee in Penrith instead.

This one suits families with older kids and anyone wanting a solid half-day walk without drama. The views are genuine rather than spectacular, and the sense of achievement comes from the walk itself rather than any breathtaking moment at the top. If you're based at Ullswater Holiday Park or one of the caravan sites scattered around Troutbeck Head or Waterfoot, Little Meldrum makes a natural addition to your itinerary. You can knock it off before lunch and still have the afternoon free.

Timing matters. Early morning in summer gives you clear skies and fewer people. Winter approaches need respect - the fell might look gentle but it's exposed, and weather changes fast. Allow extra time if the ground's wet.
