The Gower Peninsula, designated as Wales' first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a sprawling coastal landscape that stretches west from Swansea into a maze of golden cliffs, hidden coves, and windswept moorland. It's not one attraction with an entrance fee - it's the whole place, free to roam whenever you fancy it.

What makes Gower so compelling is the variety packed into its relatively compact geography. Rhossili Beach is the showstopper: three miles of sand backed by cliffs that command proper attention. Three Cliffs Bay offers something more intimate, a crescent of beach hemmed by dramatic limestone formations that appear almost primeval. Inland, the heathland and woodland give you actual peace - something genuinely rare this close to a major town.

Walkers will absolutely thrive here. The coastal path delivers genuine views without requiring mountaineering skills, and the internal paths let you slip away from the beaches entirely if the crowds get too much. History enthusiasts appreciate the Bronze Age burial cairns and medieval churches scattered across the peninsula. Families do well on the beaches themselves, though tide times matter - you'll want to check before you head out.

The genius thing about staying at one of the nearby parks - Newpark, Skysea, or Gower Holiday Village are all minutes away - is that you can explore the peninsula properly over several days without rushing. The best light falls late afternoon on the western cliffs. Early morning at Rhossili before the car parks fill gives you the beach almost to yourself. It's not dramatic wilderness, but it's proper coastal Wales done well.
