Grange Plantation

You're looking at proper woodland here - Grange Plantation spreads across East Yorkshire with the kind of dense tree cover that makes you forget York's only a few miles south. It's a working forest, so don't expect manicured paths or visitor centres. What you get instead is the real thing: tall conifers, open glades, and the sort of quiet that actually feels rare these days.

It's not dramatic scenery, but there's something restorative about it. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after forty minutes or so - there's no water features or open spaces for running about. But teenagers and serious walkers will get more from it. Best visited in autumn when the ground's dry enough and the early morning mist gives everything an atmospheric edge.
