Kirkham Priory

The ruins of Kirkham Priory rise from the River Derwent valley about four miles south-east of York, and they're genuinely impressive even in their crumbled state. What you're looking at are the remains of an Augustinian priory founded in 1120 - so we're talking proper medieval stonework, with enough of the church, cloister, and domestic buildings still standing to give you a real sense of monastic life.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick photo stop. The entrance gatehouse is particularly striking, and if you follow the ruins around, you can make out where the refectory would have been, where the monks ate in silence. The setting matters too - the priory sits in parkland that slopes down to the river, which is lovely in itself and means you're not just staring at old stones.

Histor enthusiasts and anyone interested in medieval England will get plenty out of this. Families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse - there's not much to do once you've had a look round - but older children who can engage with the history will be fine for an hour. The walk down to the river adds another twenty minutes or so if you've got the energy.

From Fox Hill Holiday Park or any of the other caravan sites nearby, it's a straightforward drive in, and makes a good half-day outing paired with York itself. English Heritage manages the site, so you'll likely need a membership or pay admission, though exact details are worth checking ahead. Go when it's not hammering with rain - the ruins are exposed and there's nowhere to shelter.
