Great Chalk Wood

The chalk downland here feels properly different from the rest of Oxfordshire - all open grassland and sudden drops into woodland that catch you off guard. Great Chalk Wood itself is the main draw, a stretch of beech and ash on the higher ground where the walking is straightforward and the views across the Thames Valley are worth the climb up from Wallingford. The ground can get muddy after rain, which is fair warning if you're thinking of bringing young kids who'd rather not get their trainers destroyed. Most people allow a couple of hours for a good walk through, though you can stretch it to a half-day if you're the type to stop and read about glacial geology. It's free to access - just park sensibly near Wallingford and navigate yourself in. Come autumn when the beech trees turn, it's genuinely lovely. Summer's busier but the shade from the canopy makes it manageable even when the rest of the county is melting. If you're based at Rolling Fields Glamping or Ridgeway View Campsite nearby, this works brilliantly as a morning walk before heading into Wallingford town for lunch. The view from the top is nice but not spectacular - don't expect Instagram-moment horizons. It's more about the walking itself and the peace of it. Worth the detour if you're after proper woodland rather than the manicured park feeling.
