Great Hill

Great Hill is a proper woodland walk just outside Colchester, the sort of place that rewards a leisurely ramble rather than a quick tick-box visit. The forest floor here is thick with leaf litter and fallen branches, and if you time it right - autumn's the best bet - the light filtering through the canopy is genuinely lovely. There's a real sense of getting away from things, even though you're never far from civilisation.

It works best for walkers who like their routes quiet and unhurried. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull after thirty minutes or so unless they're proper nature types, but teenagers and adults who enjoy spotting wildlife or just thinking will get hours out of it. The paths are reasonably well-maintained, though they can be muddy after rain, so come prepared.

Allow a good hour to two hours depending on how far you fancy going and whether you're stopping to listen for birds or hunt for woodland plants. Spring brings bluebells in patches, which lifts the whole experience. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring a bottle of water.

If you're basing yourself at Polstead Country Park nearby - that's only 4.8 miles away and worth the drive - Great Hill works perfectly as a morning or afternoon addon. Both give you that proper Suffolk woodland feel without the crowds you'd get at bigger attractions. It's honest woodland, nothing fancy, and that's exactly what makes it worth the trip.
