Great Sandhurst Wood

The woodland canopy here is thick enough that even on a bright day you're walking in dappled shade, which is rather lovely when summer heat builds up across the Weald. Great Sandhurst Wood sits just outside Wadhurst and offers proper forest walking - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think, unlike the overrun beauty spots an hour north.

It's ancient woodland, the sort of place where you notice things. Bluebells in spring, decent fungi in autumn, the occasional muntjac deer if you're quiet enough. The paths are well-maintained without being manicured to death. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main routes, though pushchairs become a proper mission once you venture off track.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. It's free, as most woodland should be. Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you want to actually explore rather than just tick it off.

If you're based at Hopgarden Glamping just down the road - it's barely three miles away - this becomes your go-to space when cabin fever sets in. The forest works well as a morning walk before heading elsewhere in the area. Still Acres, a couple of miles further out, is equally convenient. It's the sort of place you don't come to as a destination but rather as a proper break from the caravan or tent, and that's exactly what it does best.
