Great Wood

The woodland around Great Wood makes for a proper walk if you're staying near Swindon and want to get away from the town itself. It's the kind of place where you actually feel like you've left things behind - dense enough that the noise of traffic disappears after ten minutes, but not so remote that you're genuinely lost. The forest floor is soft underfoot most of the year, which is either lovely or boggy depending on the season.

You'll get the most out of this if you're the sort who enjoys a straightforward woodland ramble rather than dramatic views or rare wildlife spotting. Families with young kids who can manage a couple of hours will find it engaging; there's enough variety in the trees and paths to keep things interesting without needing playground infrastructure. Bring proper footwear though - it's not a manicured nature trail with bark chippings.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that we could find, so come prepared. Head out early if you want any solitude. It works brilliantly as a half-day outing between Park Farm Campsite or Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park - both within easy reach. If you're staying at one of the local parks and the weather turns decent, this is exactly the sort of place to fill a morning without any faffing about with entrance fees or timetables. It's free, it's straightforward, and it does what it says on the tin.
