Green Wood

The woodland around Strathdon is proper thick and atmospheric - ancient Scots pine and birch that genuinely make you feel small. Green Wood isn't a manicured visitor attraction with car parks and gift shops; it's a working forest where you can actually move through the trees without feeling herded. The walking is straightforward enough, paths thread through without being overly signposted, so there's a real sense of finding your own way rather than following the yellow arrows everyone else uses.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's the kind of place where you notice things - the spongy forest floor, the light filtering through, the odd red squirrel if you're lucky and quiet. Kids under eight might struggle with the lack of "attractions" - there's no waterfall big reveal or adventure playground. Teenagers and adults who actually want forest immersion will find it rewarding.

You can spend anywhere from ninety minutes to half a day here depending on how far you roam. Free to access as far as I can tell, though always worth checking locally before you go. The nearest proper town is Strathdon, which is small but workable for basics.
