Greenhill Dod

The walk up Greenhill Dod starts from Moffat and rewards you with proper Lowland views - rolling moorland stretching away in all directions, with the Southern Uplands doing their thing on the horizon. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but that's rather the point. This is honest, unshowy walking country where you can actually breathe and think.

The ascent itself is straightforward enough, taking around two hours there and back for most people. The terrain is moorland and grass, so boots with decent grip matter - it gets boggy in places. On a clear day you'll see right across the borders; on a grey one, it's moody and atmospheric in that particularly Scottish way. Most walkers tackle it as part of a longer route from Moffat, combining it with neighbouring peaks for a proper morning on the hills.

Historically minded visitors might appreciate the fact that this corner of Dumfries & Galloway sits squarely in droving country - these hills saw cattle herds moving south for centuries. It's not written on plaques; you just feel it underfoot.

If you're basing yourselves at one of the local caravan sites - Riverside or Moffat's Caravanning Club Site are closest - this makes for a solid half-day or full-day outing depending on your fitness and how many peaks you string together. Families with confident hillwalkers will enjoy it; younger children might find the moorland a bit samey. Spring and autumn are best, when the weather's more predictable and the midges less enthusiastic. Winter can be grim.
