Craig Hill

Standing at 451 metres above sea level, this grassy summit rewards the determined with views across the Annan Valley and towards the higher Lowther Hills. The walk up from Moffat takes about an hour and a half each way, following sheep tracks through rough moorland - proper walking boots are essential here.

Hikers looking for a decent workout without the crowds of Scotland's more famous peaks will find Craig Hill fits the bill perfectly. The initial climb is fairly gentle, but the final approach gets properly steep. On a clear day, you can see for miles across the rolling Dumfries & Galloway countryside.

Families with older children who can handle a sustained climb will enjoy this one, though toddlers definitely won't make it to the top. The lack of any marked path means basic navigation skills are useful - download an OS map to your phone before setting off.

From holiday parks around Moffat like the Camping and Caravanning Club Site, Craig Hill makes for a satisfying half-day adventure. The town itself has good pubs for a well-earned pint afterwards. Weather can change quickly up here, so pack waterproofs even if it looks fine when you start. Allow three to four hours total including stops.
