Greens Wood

The woodland around Greens Wood offers a proper escape into Staffordshire's quieter side, just outside Shifnal. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - ancient oaks and mixed woodland that feels genuinely removed from the usual tourist circuit. The paths wind through decent undergrowth, and if you time it right in autumn the colour is genuinely striking.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a managed attraction with visitor centres or themed trails, so you need to be the type who enjoys a straightforward woodland wander rather than a structured experience. Bring a map or load up your phone beforehand - signage is minimal. Allow two hours if you want to do a proper circuit without rushing.

This works well as a morning walk if you're based at High Onn Holiday Park nearby - they're only four miles away, making it an easy run. Copper Beech Glamping is also close enough for a quick sortie. The forest isn't dramatic in the way some woodland can be, but it's exactly what you need on a quiet day when you want trees, fresh air, and no queues.

It's free to access and there's no particular season that works better than another, though wet ground is a real consideration after rain. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after an hour, but if your kids actually like hiking rather than playgrounds, they'll be fine.
