Gregg's Wood

Walk into Gregg's Wood and you're immediately absorbed by the kind of quiet that rarely happens these days. This is proper Sussex woodland - dense enough that the outside world feels genuinely distant, but not so vast that you'll get lost or spend all day wandering around. The paths are well-trodden and straightforward, winding through established trees with enough light filtering through to make it pleasant rather than gloomy.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're based at Hopgarden Glamping and Camping nearby and fancy escaping for a couple of hours without driving far. The walk takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour if you meander, though you could easily stretch it longer. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the main trails - there's nothing particularly challenging underfoot, though after rain it can get boggy in patches.

Historically minded visitors might find themselves speculating about the woodland's past, though there's not much interpretation on the ground. What you get instead is genuine woodland atmosphere - the kind of place where you notice things. Birdsong. The texture of bark. How the light changes as you move deeper in.

From Tunbridge Wells it's easily accessible, and the lack of visitor infrastructure (car parks, cafes, gift shops) means it stays relatively uncrowded. Bring decent shoes, expect it to feel a bit rough around the edges, and you'll leave thinking it was time well spent. It's not showy, but it's honest.
