Gully Green

Ancient woodland doesn't get much more authentic than Gully Green. This proper forest sprawls across Shropshire with the kind of dense canopy that swallows you whole the moment you step in, and the walking here is genuinely excellent - varied terrain, plenty of paths to choose from, and no theme park nonsense.

You're looking at a serious woodland experience. The gully itself is the main draw - a wooded ravine with streams running through it that feels genuinely wild. Bring decent boots because the ground gets boggy and uneven, and the tree cover means it stays damp even when the rest of the county's been dry for weeks. Most people spend two to three hours here and that feels about right before the novelty of endless trees wears thin.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this place. Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will be fine; young children might find it tedious after an hour. If you're after history or facilities, you'll be disappointed - it's just trees and paths. But if you want to properly walk through proper ancient woodland without crowds, this is it.

It works brilliantly as a morning excursion from Mill Farm Holiday Park or Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp - both just over five miles away. You could combine it with a village wander in nearby Willstone before heading back for lunch. Free to access, no gates, no visitors centre. Exactly what it should be.
