Hagbourne Copse

The walk into Hagbourne Copse is deceptively easy - flat tracks through mixed woodland that look gentle on the map but reveal themselves slowly as you push deeper into the trees. It's a working nature reserve run by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, so don't expect manicured paths or boardwalks. What you get instead is genuine woodland: bluebells in spring if you time it right, proper birdsong, and the kind of quiet that actually lets you think.

Wildlife spotters will have the best time here. Bring binoculars and a decent field guide - the mix of oak, ash and hazel supports everything from woodpeckers to smaller songbirds depending on the season. It's not a destination for very young kids who need obvious attractions or frequent photo stops, but older children who can manage a couple of miles on foot without complaint will find it rewarding. The trails aren't marked as clearly as you might hope, so download a map or go with someone who knows it.

It's free to visit, which counts for a lot. You'll need maybe ninety minutes if you're taking your time and actually looking for things. Spring is the obvious choice, but autumn's just as good if you want colour and fewer people. The nearest town is Swindon, about twenty minutes away, though if you're camping at Park Farm Campsite just down the road, you're perfectly placed for a morning wander before a proper day out. It's not dramatic or famous, but it works if you want to step properly away from things.
