Hailsham Country Park

The wetland pathways at Hailsham Country Park wind through reed beds and open water in a way that actually feels removed from the town itself, despite being practically on its doorstep. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind where you'll spot herons, dragonflies, and if you're lucky, water voles darting through the margins.

Walkers and birdwatchers will find the most to do here. The trails are straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though patience is required if you want to clock anything interesting wildlife-wise. An hour or two covers the main paths; half a day if you're genuinely into spotting birds. Bring binoculars. The best time is early morning or dusk when things are actually moving about.

Admission appears to be free, which makes it a useful stop if you're based at one of the local campsites like Fontmills Farm or Golden Cross Holiday Park, both within a couple of miles. It's the sort of place that works well as a morning visit before heading elsewhere - decent enough in its own right, but not compelling enough to plan a day entirely around it.

The reserve does its job without fuss. No facilities to speak of, so sort yourself out in Hailsham first. If you're after wetland walks in East Sussex and the weather's cooperating, it's worth the detour. Just don't expect anything dramatic.
