Hampstead Weir

The weir cuts across the River Medway just outside Maidstone with a proper satisfying roar when the water's high. It's one of those spots that locals know and visitors often miss, which is exactly why it's worth the detour. You get industrial heritage mixed with river drama - the structure itself dates back centuries, and watching the water tumble over during wet weather is genuinely compelling.

Walkers get the most from this one. The towpath runs alongside, giving you clear views of the weir's mechanics, and you can follow the river both ways for a decent stroll without committing to an epic hike. Families with older kids won't find much to do beyond gawping and taking photos, but the novelty of standing near a working weir keeps under-tens entertained for twenty minutes or so. Bring wellies if there's been rain - the ground gets boggy.

There's no admission charge and no fixed hours; you simply turn up. Allow thirty minutes to an hour if you're combining it with a riverside walk. Early morning is best if you want the place to yourself, though it's rarely rammed anyway.

It works well as a break-point between staying at Still Acres Touring & Camping Site, just 3.6 miles away, and heading into Maidstone town centre. If you're doing a park holiday in Kent, this scratches the water-and-history itch without requiring a coach trip. Not Instagram-famous, but that's rather the point.
