Hangbois Wood

A proper woodland walk just east of Hitchin, Hangbois Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a day around. The trees are dense enough to feel like proper forest - beech and oak mostly - and there's a decent network of paths that wind through without being overcomplicated. It's free to wander, and you won't need more than an hour or two unless you're the type who stops to identify every bird call.

This is walkers' territory, not a theme park. Families with young kids might manage thirty minutes before the novelty wears off, but older children who actually like being outdoors will get something from it. The paths can be muddy after rain - proper bog in places - so waterproof boots aren't optional in winter.

The woodland sits nicely within reach of Jacks Hill Caravans and Baldock Park Homes if you're basing yourself in the area for a park holiday. It's the sort of place to stretch your legs between longer days out, rather than a destination in itself. Worth a visit if you're camping locally and want an easy morning walk, but don't expect any views or grand vistas. It's just good, solid woodland that does what it says on the tin.
