Harding's Slack

The woodland walk through Harding's Slack, just inland from Whitby, feels properly remote despite being barely three miles from the coast. You're dropping into a steep-sided valley where the trees crowd in tight - oak, ash, and birch forming a green tunnel that blocks out most of the sky. It's the kind of place where you actually notice birdsong.

The path descends sharply into the slack itself, a natural ravine where a small stream runs year-round. In spring the forest floor explodes with bluebells and wild garlic. Summer's too warm to recommend unless you start early. Autumn's when it's at its best - damp earth, golden light filtering through thinning canopy, barely another soul around.

This isn't a destination for small children or anyone avoiding steep gradients. The terrain's uneven, roots grab at your boots, and there's genuine scrambling involved on the way down. But for walkers after a proper forest experience without the crowds of the Peak District, it's worth the effort. Plan on ninety minutes to two hours depending on your pace.

Coupled with a stay at one of the nearby holiday parks - Northcliffe & Seaview gets top marks for a reason - you've got the perfect excuse to explore the Whitby coast properly. The slack makes a natural loop with a beach walk back towards town if you're staying at Whitby Holiday Park itself. It's a cracking way to shake off the caravan feeling.
