Hare Law

The walk up Hare Law takes about forty minutes from Tayport, and it's one of those hills that sneaks up on you - not steep enough to be dramatic, but persistent enough that you notice your legs by the top. The summit sits at 430 metres, which is hardly mountaineering, but the views across the Tay estuary toward the Ochils are genuinely good, especially on a clear day when you can pick out the bridges and the sprawl of Dundee beyond.

It's very much a local's walk rather than a destination in itself. The terrain is moorland and grassland - fairly open, which means wind can be a genuine factor even when it's calm elsewhere. The path is well-enough marked, though nothing fancy. Most people clock it in a morning, and it works perfectly as part of a wider ramble around Fife.

For families with younger kids, it's reasonable if you're after something achievable without drama. Walkers will find it a decent leg-stretcher, particularly if you're basing yourself at Tayport Links Caravan Park or Larick Campsite - both proper spots within a mile or so. Combine it with a walk along the coastal path and you've got a solid half-day sorted.

Go early if you want any hope of solitude, and check the weather - exposed moorland like this gets bleak fast when the cloud rolls in. It's free, obviously, and there's parking near the start. Nothing fancy, but it does what it says on the tin.
